Some students of Summerville High School are enrolled for the Dual Enrollment program at Columbia College.
“The dual enrollment program is when students are taking classes at Columbia College while attending high school. To start, you must complete a petition form that gets sent to the college, that allows you to register for courses,” Mrs. Fray explained.
On Columbia College’s website, you can find out if you are eligible for Dual Enrollment by meeting the credit requirement and holding good grades.
Mrs. Fray explained how you can enroll for courses as early as freshman year.
Senior Atticus Narron is currently taking the Music Theory course at Columbia. He noted how he balances his school work by going after school.
“I only take classes after school hours,” he explained. He went on to say that his experience is going well, the commute time is low, and that he prefers college over high school.
Currently, students are enrolled during the spring semester.
Sophomore Tyler Karpus shared his recent progress this semester. He is enrolled in the online Spanish course that Columbia provides.
“The hardest part about taking this class is finding the time to do it and being able to pay attention to the class,” stated Karpus.
He also explained how it’s hard to not procrastinate doing work.
The Dual Enrollment program allows students to gain additional skills that they can utilize in the future. Senior Mia Westcamp shared her experience in learning that to be able to pass the class, she must study the curriculum.
“So far, in my Musical Theory class, I have advanced my presentation skills,” said Westcamp.
Summerville High School students are able to graduate with both high school and college credits, help expand their knowledge and allow them to get a head start on their postgraduate journey.
