2023 was an eventful year for the Summerville Bears. From fun themed football games, to making school history with a section title, it was a year to remember.

Bears 2023-2024 football had a great season with a  9-3 record, which made it possible to revisit the playoffs once again. Many students enjoyed participating in the themes as well as the games themselves.

Students such as senior Katleynn Bowley commented on her favorite memories during the football season.

“The football games were always fun. I’ll miss going to those once I graduate,” Bowley stated.

Another upcoming event towards the end of the school year is Disneyland Grad Nite, which is a special event held for Summerville Seniors.

Senior, Kyley Graham, who had the opportunity to go last year as a junior said, “It would be the 2023 Grad Nite, I liked that we were there until 2 [am] in the morning and obviously because it’s Disney,” said Graham.

Ms. Garcia, health teacher at Summerville High, commented on the 2023 ASB (Associated Student Body) CASL (California Association Student Leadership) trip held in Anaheim, California. There, different high school student bodies came together at a leadership program and performed many different activities, conferences, and meetings regarding the student body.

“I was asked to chaperone for the CASL trip for ASB and it was one of the coolest things ever… Being around those kids and seeing them interact with other schools so well was one of the coolest things ever,” Ms. Garcia stated.

Summerville and Sonora are known to have a school rivalry. No matter the competition, it’s always something to look forward to and a great excitement when a win is pulled off.

Junior, Walker Crook, and sophomore, Layla Villanueva, spoke on how winning against Sonora in their sport was their favorite school memory.

Walker states, “Beating Sonora during JV baseball last year when I was a sophomore was pretty sweet.”

Layla followed up by saying, “Our basketball team, in January, beat Sonora and that was honestly neat.”

It is always a good memory to beat a school rival.

Last school year, JV Baseball was able to take home a league win in their division.

Sophomore Owen Herrera expressed his favorite memory with the team.

“We played ‘Among Us’ in the van going to a baseball game,” said Herrera.

Ms. Monroe commented on her Team Sports class during the 2023 year.

“They used to shoot half court shots and if they made it they could get out of warm-ups which I thought was funny because when they got it everyone would freak out and act like they won the World Series or something,” said Ms. Monroe.

2023 was a successful year for Summerville and they hope to make 2024 even better.
