2024 Scholarship Night

Seniors receive local scholarships and prepare for their plans after high school

On May 28, 2024 selected seniors were celebrated for receiving local scholarships. Their families and friends attended the event in the theater to see them accept the scholarships they worked hard for. Most prompts for the scholarships included writing essays on specific topics and resonating with the ideas that the scholarship foundations stand for.

The scholarships received at the event were from Adventist Health Sonora Volunteers Scholarship, Alpha Iota Chapter of Omega Nu, Alumni Scholarship of Summerville Elementary School, Major Lucas Gruenther Memorial, American Legion- Smyth- Bolter Post #58, Bear Boosters Scholarship, Beau Bachtelle Memorial Scholarship, Carlos Vieira Foundation Race to End of the Stigma, CAST Scholarship, Chris Anderson Memorial Scholarship, Caldera Construction Scholarship, Clark Broadcasting, E-Clampus Vitus- Matuca Chapter, Elks Lodge Sonora, Emigrant Basin park Club Scholarship, Friends of the Sonora Police Department Scholarship, Front Porch Inc. Scholarship, KAAD Youth Radio Scholarship, Koral Family Scholarship, Knights of Columbus, Lori Briscoe Memorial Scholarship, Merlin Heldstab Athletic Scholarship, Mitchell Dahi Memorial Law Enforcement Scholarship, Quarterback Club Scholarship, Robert Caldera Construction Scholarship, Rock in Road- Ron DeLacy Scholarship, Ron Arlington Memorial Scholarship, Society of Tuolumne (TWIST), Sonora AAUW Scholarship, Soroptimist of Twain Harte, TCACA Future Educators Scholarship, Teleli Woman’s Weekenders Golf Scholarship, Tuolumne County’s Small Livestock Exhibitors Assoc. Twain Harte Horsemen Scholarship, Vietnam Veterans of America, VFW Post 4748 Scholarship, and Women of the Moose and Loyal order of Moose Scholarship.

Students who focused on certain activities in high school were able to write their essays resonating with the scholarship topics. Senior Ruby James gave advice to future seniors after receiving her scholarship.

“Apply to scholarships even if you’re not going to a four-year. Do as much as you can in high school because experience will get you places and you can write about those personal experiences in your scholarships. It’s worth it,” said James.

Senior Trenton Miller also commented on his take away from these four years of high school.

“High school is sort of your last chance to try things and experience things before becoming an adult. Lots of my graduate friends told me not to procrastinate and just go for things and looking back that would definitely be my advice to younger students,” stated Miller.

Students also received scholarships from Sonora Area Foundation, including Aronos Williams and Doris Morris Scholarship, Bill Gerber Sr. Memorial Scholarship, Bryce Sanguinetti Memorial Scholarship, Captain John T. Berger Scholarship, Chimenti Family Scholarship, Eva Schicke Scholarship, Gilbert Poulter Memorial Scholarship, Hailey Hurst Memorial Scholarship, Hailey Hurst Memorial Scholarship, Harry A, Reidinger Memorial Scholarship, HealtLit Now Scholarship, Homer Latimer Memorial Scholarship, James. O Dale Memorial Scholarship, Jeff Vassallo Memorial- Friday Night Live, Jim Baldridge Memorial Scholarship, Lucille Arnold Incentive Scholarship, Lyle C. Scott Memorial Scholarship, Martha Barnes Memorial Scholarship, Restivo Memorial Music Scholarship, Ruth and Wes Wyllie Art Scholarship, Terry Campbell Loshalegro Memorial Award, Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Posse, Tuolumne County Tennis Association, TCAR Jennie Evans Scholarship, and Vicki L. Smith Scholarship.

Lastly Summerville Scholarships and Awards were announced by scholarship foundation members and SHS staff members. These scholarships included Summerville CSEA Chapter Scholarship, Absolutely Fabulous Senior Projects, Summerville Student Service Award, and Summervile High Valedictorian along with the Salutatorian.

This year’s graduation will celebrate all of Summerville’s graduating seniors, and especially their salutatorian Cooper Knobloch, and three Valedictorians, Gabe Colemanares, Ellery Stewart, and Leila Stuart.

Some of the scholarships from local businesses were focused towards students who are planning on going into that profession. Other students also received scholarships from the Rotary Club and were invited to a dinner in the cafeteria for recognition.

Beyond the Cave wishes all the seniors luck in their future endeavors and congratulates those who received scholarships.
