New Position: College and Career Counselor

SUSHD will hire for a new position–a College and Career Counselor position. “We are hoping that this position will shorten the gap with college choices or career choices or trades or whatever they want to do,” said Janae Perkins, SUHSD executive secretary.

Summerville Union High School is adding a new counselor position on their campus. This new position is the College and Career Counselor.

This position is new for the SHS campus and many are wondering what this type of position entails and what this role could offer to students here.

In an interview with freshman Bella Martinez, she explained that she hasn’t heard of the position.

“No, I did not know about the position.”

In another interview with Caeley Vincent, she explained that she also did not know of the position, but she believes that it seems cool.

“ No, I did not know of that new position, but it seems cool.”

Although students do not know of this position, Summerville Staff was aware. For information regarding this new position, Jenae Perkins, SUHSD executive secretary, explained that this new position is being added since the school got a grant from the CSCA— the Central States Communication Association.

“We got a grant, a K-16 grant, and part of that is hiring for that position, so that was Mr. Christopher and I wrote up the job description; it went through the CSCA today and all of that,” said Perkins.

Perkins elaborated more about the grant SHS applied for and received.

“The K-16 grant is through Columbia College and it is just a grant for highschools and colleges and our county offices, that’s all I really know about it.”

With this new position being added, a new question was brought up. This question being, how will this benefit Summerville Union High School?

In an interview with junior JT Souza, he explained that it will be useful for Summerville since it can direct kids onto what path they want to follow after high school, and get help if they need it.

“Yes, since it can lead you on the path you want to take and I could see the benefits, also that people can have the opportunity to get help.”

Interviews for this position took place Thursday, April 25 and Friday, April 26. BTC will follow this story and follow-up when the position has been filled.
